DNA (genetic material) is a highly polymorphic molecule that is unique to every individual with the exception of identical twins. As each person inherits half of his or her genetic material from his or her mother and the other half from his or her biological father, it is possible to determine family relationships. However, the further removed the relative is, the less genetic material the individuals will have in common, thus reducing the probative force of the test.

Brother/Sister Sibling Test
PRO-DNA Diagnostic is able to determine whether two people are full brothers/sisters, in other words, whether they have the same biological mother and father. Half-Brother/Half-Sister Sibling Test

Grandparentage Test
When paternity testing is impossible because the presumed father is deceased and there is no possibility of performing a post-mortem paternity test, it is possible to determine the paternal relationship using samples from the presumed paternal grandparents. This test may also be indicated when the presumed father has disappeared.

Sampling and Specifications

The DNA test is performed on a buccal swab sample. This simple, painless type of sampling procedure yields results that are as reliable as blood sampling results. Moreover, it can be performed as easily on a newborn or child as on an adult.

For customers wishing to undergo the Family relationship test for legal purposes, our laboratory takes charge of coordinating appointments with one of our sampling centres in your community. Customers are asked to present several pieces of photo ID at their appointments.

For customers wishing to undergo the Family relationship test — at-home sampling, upon receipt of payment, our laboratory will send you a sampling kit together with instructions and a return envelope. The package will also include consent forms to be completed and signed by the test participants and, if applicable, by the legal guardian of any participants who are minors. Before performing the test, our laboratory will verify each person's consent by telephone.

The results are released within 10 working days following the laboratory's receipt of the samples.
